Eye spy: The role of inflammation in neurodegenerative disease?
For over eight years, Dr Lola Mugisho has worked on understanding the role of inflammation in neurodegenerative diseases affecting the eye and brain, such as age-related macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease. During this talk, Dr Mugisho will describe the work made possible by the generous funding from the Neurological Foundation, along with the exciting new therapeutic options that could be a gamechanger in our battle against these diseases.
About the Speaker
Dr Lola Mugisho is a senior research fellow who holds a Neurological Foundation First Fellowship and is the Deputy Director of the Buchanan Ocular Therapeutics Unit at the University of Auckland. Dr Mugisho completed her PhD at the University of Auckland in 2018. Since then, she has been awarded several prestigious grants and awards including the Health Research Council Emerging Researcher First Grant as well as the New Horizons Women’s Trust Margaret L Bailey Science Award. Her research focusses primarily on understanding the role of the inflammasome pathway in chronic neurodegenerative diseases. Her expertise includes developing in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models in which to test new therapies.
