Brain Awareness Month 2021: Nelson

Throughout the month of March, we’re taking our researchers on the road to celebrate the research that you have helped fund. Brain Awareness Month is a chance for the Neurological Foundation to connect with its supporters throughout New Zealand and share with them the new and exciting breakthroughs that have been happening in the lab!

We hope you’ll celebrate Brain Awareness Month with us this year to commemorate the past 50 years of research, and to see where the next 50 will take us.

ABOUT THE TOPIC

The fascinating physics making MRI possible originally sparked his interest in the imaging technique. From this initial attraction to the physics evolved an even greater passion – using imaging techniques to study health and disease. During this event, Dr Melzer will discuss his exciting research including the role he has in the longitudinal Parkinson’s disease study and what the future holds for this study and for neuroimaging. He will also be discussing some of the other research he has had a role in at the NZBRI collaborating with other scientists and clinicians.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Tracy Melzer is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch, and the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) Research Manager at the New Zealand Brain Research Institute (NZBRI). He works within the Parkinson’s disease research group that has recruited one of the world’s largest single-centre cohorts of well-characterised Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients with MRI data. This cohort is unique and is the result of years of effort from many members of the NZBRI and a large group of volunteers, both with and without Parkinson’s disease.

The event will be held in the Theatre, of the The Suter Art Gallery in Nelson.

The doors for registration and seating will open at 6.00 pm. There will be a mix and mingle period after the event with the speaker where refreshments and food will be served.
