Dopamine

A neurotransmitter (chemical released by nerve cells) involved in motivation, learning, pleasure, the control of body movement, and other brain functions.

The destruction of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra is what produces the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Dopamine is also thought to be involved in schizophrenia, addiction and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder through its involvement in behaviour regulation in the prefrontal cortex.
