Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank

The Human Brain Bank, funded by the Neurological Foundation, has become a key scientific resource for researchers developing new treatments and cures for neurological conditions.

A world-class resource holding secrets to future breakthroughs

In 1994, the Neurological Foundation granted the university funds to purchase a minus-80 degree chest freezer, which became the cornerstone of the only human brain bank in New Zealand.

Since then, with funding from the Neurological Foundation, the Human Brain Bank has grown to house one of the most valuable and extensive collections of human brain tissue in the world. The brain tissue stored in the banks freezers provides vital clues in the study of neurological conditions and is a precious resource for researchers working towards breakthroughs in managing, treating and curing these conditions.

30 years of brain banking

The bank has received tissue from more than 1000 whole brains, providing evidence of a wide range of neurological conditions, with a focus on the commonest neurological disorders, and healthy brains to compare with. In addition, brain tissue samples have been received from 4500 donors who have had neurosurgical operations.

We know the history of every brain we research thanks to our close relationships with the families, that’s only possible in a small country like New Zealand, and it means our tissue is in demand all over the world.
