About 12,000 Kiwis have Parkinson’s disease - a figure expected to rise significantly in coming years.

“It is a debilitating disease. It has devastated people’s lives and it has devastated their families’ lives,” says Professor Bas Bloem, a world-renowned expert who spoke at a Neurological Foundation event in Christchurch.

Particularly worrisome was his belief it was largely a man-made disease, he said.
