A day in the life of a neuroscientist - Xheherazade Anushan

My name is Xheherazade Anushan from Crimson Global Academy.

I’m Xheherazade, I’m 16 years old, and I go to Crimson Global Academy, an online school. Neuroscience was something I was interested in from a distance from mid-Junior school, but I didn’t really think it would go anywhere. Brain Bee has sparked that curiosity I always had about the brain, and I was so thrilled and honoured to receive the prize of the internship.

While I was there, we visited the Centre for Brain Research labs and got to speak to different neuroscientists about what they were doing, each of them at different stages of research. We also got to visit the Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank, where we got an explanation of how it works, and what different researchers do with the brains to find out more about neurological diseases. Also, we learnt about MRIs, how they work, and what some of the different uses of an MRI are, as well as spent quite a while at the AMRF Medical Sciences Learning Centre. It was absolutely fascinating, and I’m in awe of everybody we met.

One thing I’ve been scared about is closing doors for myself because of subject selection, and one thing the internship did for me is reassure me that I haven’t done anything of the sort. The scientists we spoke to all had different stories of how they got into neurological research, and it comforted me because they all ended up in research at the end of the day.

The internship inspired me, and I feel encouraged that a future career path for me could be neuroscience. I really enjoyed my time at the Centre for Brain Research, and I’m so glad I got this wonderful opportunity.
