Made possible by the University of Auckland's Centre for Brain Research along with the generosity of the Neurological Foundation, the opportunity given to me to intern at one of New Zealand’s top brain research facilities has truly carved out a special place in my heart.
Arriving slightly late from Wellington because of unexpected travel issues that I should have expected due to the unreliable nature of transport within New Zealand, I was introduced to a number of like-minded individuals, similarly lucky enough to be awarded this opportunity.
The supportive, friendly and welcoming environment maintained throughout the tour was perhaps one of my favourite things about the internship. Being surrounded by such dedicated and driven people encouraged me to be more curious and eager to learn as well, which is why I believe opportunities like Brain Bee are so important to opening doors for aspiring students, as it creates an environment where interested students can nurture their curiosity together, rather than in isolation.
These feelings were amplified as we toured the labs and got to interact and talk with various PhD students, all in the throes of researching one of the universe's greatest mysteries–the brain. Being able to talk to them, ask them questions and simply watch them interact with their research, was truly a formative and eye-opening experience. Before Brain Bee, there was a certain disconnect I felt with neuroscience. It was interesting but not immersive. However, in participating in Brain Bee, and subsequently, the internship, this experience bridged the gap between myself and neuroscience, as it allowed me to get up close with the field in a way I never could have otherwise.
This internship gave me the means to reflect on what I wanted to do with my future, and solidified my interest in science. I am deeply grateful to the University of Auckland and the Neurological Foundation for providing this key opportunity, which has opened a new realm of possibilities for my future.
